If you are considering purchasing a new air conditioner, act now to save money over next year’s models. New coolant regulations go into effect Jan. 1, 2025, and will have a significant impact on cost. Hatfield Heating and Air Conditioning is among the top rated air conditioning companies in the area, and we are here to help. We have what you need to know about the new coolant and how it will affect next year’s prices. When you need a fast, friendly AC company in Sumter, call Hatfield!
Types of refrigerants
In 2025, two types of AC refrigerants will meet the new global warming standards. R454B will meet air conditioner emissions standards for the next 10 years. R32 will meet the standards but will be obsolete in five years. While good for the environment, these refrigerants will require changes from manufacturers of air conditioning systems.
Why is this happening?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set Global Warming Potential (GWP) ratings of 750 or less for air conditioners sold beginning January 1, 2025. To put this into perspective, the current refrigerants have a GWP between 1,800 and 2,200.
What effect will this have on cost?
Because of the change in refrigerant, air conditioners compatible with the new coolant will be more expensive and will have additional related costs. There will be new sensors added to monitor the coolant. New mandated installation practices will extend installation times, so labor costs could be higher for every AC company in Sumter and beyond. The new systems will require new tools and training, which might affect long-term pricing
Will your air conditioning still perform the same?
You will notice no difference in performance between next year’s new air conditioners and the models available now. Next year’s models provide no difference or improvement in efficiency and capabilities. The only difference is the new, more environmentally friendly coolant. If you purchase a new unit now with the current refrigerant, you will be able to continue using it for the life of the unit, of course. The new refrigerant only affects units sold after Jan. 1.
